In my experience the favorite question of every preschooler begins with “why.” As a parent and grandparent, I have answered my share of those questions. It seems that adults focus more on the questions of “what” or “how” and spend little time with the “why.” Christian Comedian Michael Jr. has a YouTube video entitled “know your why” in which he demonstrates that “knowing your why, makes your what more impactful.” I make it a personal discipline to revisit the “why” before discussing the “what, how, when or where.” Failure to do so will cause you to drift off course, which is what has happened in many churches today.
In January of 2021, we began a new journey with new leaders in the Office of Sunday School & Discipleship. That journey began with a renewed focus on the question of why. Why has God brought me here? Why does the church exist? Why does the Office of Sunday School & Discipleship exist? This discussion was essential to our relationship to God, each other, and to the people we serve. The results include the launching of this website.
To answer the why, we looked at three key passages often referred to as The Great Commandment, The Great Commission, and The Great Call. We believe these passages will help every follower of Christ, every Church, every pastor and teacher to answer their why. Here is the succinct description of each:
- The Great Commandment – Love God, Love People
- The Great Commission – Make Disciples
- The Great Call – To Equip and Encourage Christ Followers
This may sound like your personal or church mission, vision, and value statement. We believe coming back to the why is essential in making all decisions. As a result of our discussions, here is our Why, What and How:
The Office of Sunday School & Discipleship exists to Encourage and Equip disciples of Jesus in Connecting people to Christ, Community, and the Commission. We seek to do this through Conversations, Connections, and Conferences (virtual, live and hybrid) with Church and Association Leadership.
We hope this website encourages and equips you to be a disciple of Jesus that makes disciples with Jesus!.
